Watch the 2016 Oscar Nominated short films at Cinema Nouveau.

Ahead of the Annual Academy Awards happening on the 28th February 2016,  Ster-Kinekor for the first time is having an exclusive screening of the 2016 Oscar Nominated Short Films. The shorts are in three categories; Animation, Live Action and Documentary. I remember this time last year writing about the 2015 Oscar shorts not having watched any of the films now this year I am quite chuffed that Cinema Nouveau is having a special and rare screening of the films which are breath taking and Incredible. I attended the preview at the V&A Waterfront Cinema Nouveau branch and watched the Live Action category. The films released on Friday the 19th February 2016 at Cinema Nouveau, Rosebank Mall, V&A Waterfront, Brooklyn Mall and Gateway Mall. A shout out to Nathan Rice for being nominated in the student film category for his short film Homeless.

For people who don’t take short films or short feature‘s if you will, too seriously one will be quite surprised at how much of an Important component shorts play in Film-making. Many filmmakers can track back to their short films that catapulted their careers to star status. Short films drives the Imagination, the pressure of knowing that one has to write a story within a 10 minute time structure have led to some compelling and marvelous tales. I write this from feelings of having seen the Oscar shorts. Since walking out of the cinema, I’ve found myself exhaling a little too much; maybe it is my heart and body releasing the emotional burdens. These thoughts are an overall prelude to the five films I watched. Firstly I am overwhelmed with feelings but if I could write one word of how I feel it would probably be sad and or bittersweet. I don’t know if the Oscar’s had a theme, but the films that were picked had running elements of grimness to them. All films screened deserved to be there, without a doubt, they are World Class. They all were consistent in quality of story and visual delivery. Outside of being nominated by the Academy each film carries heavy weight in their own respective accolades.

I just feel so damn sad though which says that all those filmmakers achieved what is incredibly difficult; touching the soul. Each story deals with real life occurrences, A fathers desperation, a unique love story and a broken childhood and a comical take on faith.

The five films I watched are:

Everything Will Be Okay.

Stutterer.

Day One.       

If I had to predict the winning film it would be Everything Will Be Okay. I will not give away anything, but this film was close to making me cry. We all know about a Mother’s love but this film shows the other side of the coin, a Father’s love and pain and if left ignored the film delves into the possibilities of what a desperate father will do. If not that film then it is a toss between Day One and Shok.

 The other two categories, Documentary and Animation are too part of the shorts making 15 films in total, 5 films per category.
